Ascension Catholic falls to Episcopal

Troy Leboeuf

The Ascension Catholic Bulldogs lost to 2A Episcopal 37-0 in their home opener at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium.

The Episcopal Knights struck early with a 63 yard-touchdown from quarterback Vincent Dellecono to running back Mike Henry.  The Bulldogs moved the ball on their first possession only to see the drive end with a dropped pass on a third down attempt.  The Knights took over an added a 60-yard touchdown from Dellecono to wide receiver Brian Bridgewater.  The Knights led 14-0 after the first quarter.

The Bulldog offense stalled in the second quarter and the Knights hit pay dirt again with a 14-yard Henry touchdown run.  Ascension Catholic squandered a scoring opportunity in the second quarter trailing 20-0 as Senior line backer Blane Falsetta recovered an Episcopal fumble at the Knights one yard line.

The Episcopal Defense held the Bulldogs on four downs for six yards and prevented Ascension Catholic from getting on the board.  The second half was similar to the first half with Episcopal adding another long touchdown pass from Dellecono to Jarrell Rogers and a 28-yard field goal by Austin Couvillian.

Coach Rick Bolotte said, “the Knights have a good team and they are stronger and faster than we are.”   “Travis Bourgeois is a classy coach and we enjoy playing his team, they should do real well in Class 2A.”  Bolotte added “my team was not intimidated, just overmatched, the rest of our schedule is against Class A teams, and we should be able to compete.”

Ascension Catholic was led by freshman running back Jaquel Wade with 53 yards on the ground on seven attempts.  Senior quarterback Collin Rowland was 14-20 for 85 yards with two interceptions; both interceptions were balls that deflected off of receivers’ hands.  Junior Thomas Gros led ACHS with six receptions.  On defense, DJ Latino led ACHS with 13 tackles.  The Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the season and Episcopal moves to 2-0.

ACHS will be back at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium this Friday against False River.  Kickoff is at 7 p.m., follow the Bulldogs on KKAY 1590 AM with a 6:45 pregame start.
