The no.13 Ascension Catholic Lady Bulldogs basketball team beat no. 20 La. Plain Dealing 68-41 Friday night to advance to the second round of the LHSAA 1A girls’ playoffs. With home court advantage, ACHS’s sixth man was certainly a difference maker.

“Our fans were awesome,” head coach Shawncy Joseph said. “The crowd got into the game early which made the girls want to win even more. It really felt good to see so many of their fellow classmates cheering them on.”

Joseph said the Lady Bulldogs approached the game for what it was and knowing if they didn’t show up, it was going to be the end of their season.

“We got off to a great start on offense and defense,” Joseph said.

Joseph said she applauds point guard Meagan Brooks because “she orchestrated everything we did.”

“She made sure everyone was involved in the offense. And defensive wise she was tough and everyone else just feed off of what she was doing,” Joseph said.

With Brooks facilitating, Rae’Shaun Malancon, Daija Harvey and Jordynn Brown were the scorers. Malancon led the way with 21 points, while Harvey added 18 and Brown tallied 14.

Joseph said she couldn’t forget to mention Harvey, a seventh grader.

“She stepped up in her first playoff game,” Joseph said. “It was really exciting to see how well she adapted to the pressure of the playoffs.  It’s very hard to find a seventh grader to take on a role of being a key piece on a high school team. That kid has a big heart and a bright future.”

The Lady Bulldogs followed the first round win and headed to no. 4 Vermillion Catholic on Monday. However, ACHS’ playoff run would end there with a 67-39 loss.
