DHS baseball lose one, win one last week

STAFF REPORT @dvillechief
DHS senior outfielder Jermey Scott catches a St. James batters fly ball to centerfield in the team’s loss last week.

The DHS baseball team beat number five ranked in 2A, Southern Lab 13-12 on Saturday at the DHS baseball field. With the game was tied 12-12 going into bottom of the seventh inning, senior Eddie Crochet stole home-plate for the win.

The win against the top team in 2A came just on the heels of a 9-7 home loss to former district rivals St. James on Wednesday.

After falling behind to St. James in the early innings 2-0, DHS’ Jiren Mitchell brings in two runners for the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 3-2.

With junior Jeremy Jones starting the game on the mound for the first time of the season, St. James was able to keep the bats swinging. However, Jones got into a late groove and retired consecutive batters to end the top of the fourth inning behind but still in position.

Senior pitcher Eddie Crochet was able to do some relief work at the top of the fifth inning, looking to close the game for the Tigers with a win. With the fifth and sixth innings being secured with strong Crochet pitching, DHS’ offense picked and was able to take the lead at 7-6 moving to the top of the seventh inning. However, St. James’ batters got hot again and was able to bring in three runs and eventually prevent the Tigers from holding on for the win.

DHS’ next outing on the mound at home will be March 27 versus district opponent E.D. White. Set to start at 4 p.m.
