Lady Bulldogs punch ticket to FastPitch 56

MERRYVILLE - The Ascension Catholic Lady Bulldogs punch their ticket to the LHSAA FastPitch 56 Tournament in Sulphur defeating 19th ranked Merryville 14-1 Friday afternoon.

Maggie Blanchard got things rolling for the Lady Bulldogs in the first with a RBI single platting Jeanne Zeringue for the first run of the game, followed by Amiee Prejeant reaching home with a stolen base. Giving the Lady Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead.

Julia Beck and the Ascension Catholic defense went to work on the Lady Panthers early as well, with Beck recording a strikeout to retire the Merryville side in order.

Ascension Catholic picked up right where they left off, scoring four runs in the top of the second off two hits. Highlighted with a Prejeant RBI single helping lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 6-0 lead after two and a half.

Merryville jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second, with a Caitlin Bateman reaching home off a Beck walk. Cutting the Ascension Catholic lead to 5 trailing 6-1 after two complete.

The Lady Panther defense stepped their game up in the third allowing Ascension Catholic no runs and picking a runner off at third base to record the third out.

Like wise the Lady Bulldogs retired the Merryville side in order, with the first two batter flying out and Beck whiffing the third for her fourth strikeout with the score remaining 6-1 after three.

The Lady Bulldogs put the game away over the course of the next two innings, scoring eight runs off eight hits.

Scoring for Ascension Catholic in the rally was Zeringue with two runs, Prejeant, Blanchard, Rae Shawn Melancon, Baily Acosta (courtesy running for Beck), Katelyn Mistretta and Nat Landry defeating the 19th ranked Lady Panthers 14-1 punching their ticket for the LHSAA State Tournament.

Julia Beck recorded the win on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs allowing one run off one hit with four strikeouts. Her counterpart Hannah Egan was scored the loss on the mound for Merryville allowing 12 runs, five earned off 11 hits with one strikeout.

Ascension Catholic was led by a hand full at the plate, including Amiee Prejeant, Rae Shawn Melancon, Baily Amadee, Julia Beck and Katelyn Mistretta. Camaren Johnson led the Lady Panthers at the plate going 1-for-2.

The No. 3 ranked Lady Bulldogs (23-6) will face No. 11 Hanson Memorial Friday, May 2 on field 17 at 2 p.m.
