DHS’ quarterback Tyler Brown passed for 326 yards in the win at Assumption Friday night.

The Donaldsonville Tigers ended last season on a last second field that booted them out of the second round of the 3A playoffs. Well, to start the 2014 season off, the team needed to avenge that loss and why not do it on opening day and in similar fashion.

Trailing the 4A Assumption Mustangs on the road, the Tigers marched all the way to the end zone for a touchdown to take the lead at 27-26 and 26 seconds on the clock. After one last defensive stand, Donaldsonville was able to start the 2014 season 1-0.

The Tigers came out hot in the game with junior quarterback Tyler Brown throwing two touchdown passes in the first quarter, and DHS led 13-6 going into the second. Brown finished the night throwing 18-27 for 326 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

At the half, DHS held its lead at 13-6 but in the third quarter, the Mustangs rallied to take the lead at 19-13 going into the fourth quarter. However, senior running back Tajh Gillard added a touchdown and senior receiver Jaquel Gant caught a touchdown pass.

Gillard rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Gant led the team with 117 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Gillard also received for 81 yards, while Stephen Sullivan caught for 67 yards and Jamal Dunn caught for 48 yards.

The Tigers next will be on the road at Dutchtown Friday night. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
