Lady Bulldogs sweep Lady Lions volleyball
The Ascension Catholic and Ascension Christian volleyball teams don’t shy away from being big parish rivals. In the last two seasons, Ascension Christian (0-8) has knocked Ascension Catholic (5-5) out of the Division V playoffs. So every match and every game between the two matters. Last week, Ascension Christian traveled to Donaldsonville to take on Ascension Catholic. This time, the home team got the win. The Ascension Catholic Lady Bulldogs swept Ascension Christian’s Lady Lions in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-16).
Lady Bulldogs head coach Chandra Ewen said a win like this is always a “morale boost” for the team.
“It’s nice for us simply because the last few times we’ve seen them they’ve knocked us out of playoff situations,” Ewen said.
Both Ascension Catholic and Ascension Christian have very young rosters this year, but the Lady Bulldogs youth stood the test.
Ascension Christian lost key seniors last year that helped the team advance to the playoff quarterfinals in 2013, and first-year head coach Holly Jennings said the team is still trying to come together at this point in the season.
“It’s just taking us a little time to get going consistently,” Jennings said. “And it’s hard with a crowd like that,” she said referring to Ascension Catholic’s fan-base.
In all three sets the Lady Bulldogs dominated from beginning to end, keeping their fans on their feet and loud.
Junior Rae’Shaun Malancon led the Lady Bulldog stat sheet with 12 kills, while junior Michayla Spano tallied 23 assists. For the Lady Lions Ally Cambre finished the evening with six kills and three blocks.
