Lady Tigers volleyball swept by Southern Lab

DHS volleyball team was swept in three sets in a home match against Southern Lab last week.

The Donaldsonville High Lady Tigers volleyball team (1-6) lost to Southern Lab in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) on Sept. 23 at the DHS Gym.

In the opening set, DHS jumped out early with five aces by Tyriel Riley, who would finish the day with nine total aces. However after the good start, the Lady Tigers would fail to maintain good passing and go the distance with Southern Lab’s rallying.

In the second set, DHS led late with a 21-20 lead but wouldn’t be able to hold on for the win. In the third set, Southern Lab controlled the entire way.

Second year head coach Nicole Berberet said she believes her team is capable of better.

“I don’t think tonight exemplified our skill level and our ability,” Berberet said. “I think we got a little down on ourselves and we got in the hole and we just couldn’t quite overcome that mentality that we were behind and we were trying not to lose instead of playing to win.”

Joy Sullivan led the Lady Tigers with eight kills, while Janira Collier added five assists to the DHS stat sheet.

However, Berberet said passing has always been the team’s weakness.

“We’ve always struggled with that and it’s something we work on everyday in practice but we need to continue to grow,” Berberet said.

Berberet added: “One of the biggest things for us is that we’re young and we’re breaking bad habits. Some balls should be easy digs, but we were out of place. If we can clean those up a little bit then we can stand to win some of those 25-22 games.”
