The Donaldsonville High School Athletic Department presented Wayne Wells with his no. 44 jersey Friday night at the DHS-Scotlandville game at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium.

Wells was recognized for his many achievements as a student-athlete at DHS, which included: 1975-1976 First Team All-District, 1975 defensive MVP, 1975-1976 All-State Unanimous Selection, and 1976 First Runner-Up All-American linebacker.

“It’s a great achievement, I appreciate the school and community for supporting me,” Wells said.

DHS Associate Principal Darryl Comery presented the jersey and a plaque and said it’s important for the student-athletes of today to know who came before them.

“And in order for our young players to know where they are going, they need to know the older guys that came through the community and through DHS, they need to know and respect them,” Comery said.

Wells said he believes it’ll do a lot of good if they pay attention to how it was done before because it takes a lot of courage.

“If they can do the right things and find out in life what you want to and be good with it,” Wells said.

Wells added, “I’m so excited it just took all the words out of my mouth.”
