The Donaldsonville High boys’ basketball team (10-5) went on a seven-game win streak during the last few weeks, but the streak was finally snapped Saturday against a tough 5A opponent in Destrehan at the East Ascension High Spartan Classic.

The Tigers have played and beat the best of teams in all class levels, including beating Hammond High 79-62 last Friday in the Spartan Classic.

Against Hammond, the Tigers found themselves in early foul trouble – playing the day after Christmas – but led Hammond 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Donaldsonville held a couple basket lead throughout the majority of the game, but head coach Lionel Gilbert said the team couldn’t stretch the lead because of the seven-day layoff the team came off of.

“Too much turkey. We’re in the holiday spirits man, we’re feeling festive, but we’re get back into it,” Gilbert said. ”Early in the game we had opportunities to run out and we’d just turn the ball over and it was to be expected after a seven-day layoff.”

However, as the game went on the Tigers got better. At the end of the third quarter Donaldsonville led Hammond 55-47. In the fourth quarter, junior forward Tyler Brown got hot from outside and nailed a couple three-pointers to stretch the Tigers’ lead.

“We finally found a rhythm and were able to maintain a run,” Gilbert said. “I like the way the guys fought through it. It wasn’t anything special, we just finally found the right combination of guys to put on the floor. They worked hard and fought through the layoff.”

After beating one 5A opponent, to come back and beat another powerhouse the following night would be asking a lot of the young Tigers’ team – and it was. With a packed gym at East Ascension, Donaldsonville battled long and hard before succumbing to a 68-60 defeat to Destrehan.

The Tigers will return home on Jan. 2 to host Glen Oaks in a makeup game that was postponed due to weather. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
