Lady Bulldogs’ hoops drop two straight

Ascension Catholic junior forward Rae’Shaun Malancon scored 16 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ loss to Redemptorist last week.

Ascension Catholic girls’ hoops (5-7) have three non-district games remaining before beginning district 8-1A play at East Iberville on Jan. 9. Unfortunately, the Lady Bulldogs find themselves in a two-game skid and have a 3A, 4A, and 2A opponent lined up to play.

Last week at home, Ascension Catholic gave up a lead early in the fourth quarter to Redemptorist and lost 56-50 in the Lady Bulldogs’ home tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs came out flat in the first quarter, and trailed 13-8 at the end of it. All eight of the team’s points came from junior forward Rae’Shaun Malancon who sank two three-pointers to keep the Ascension Catholic hopes alive.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs got hot and rolled out to a 28-21 lead going into halftime. However in the third quarter, Redemptorist made runs to close the scoring gap and only trailed 37-35 going into the final quarter.

Ascension Catholic head coach Shawancy Joseph said the Lady Bulldogs got relaxed in the third quarter and it hurt them.

“We didn’t come out executing like we did in the second quarter like we wanted to,” Joseph said. “We stopped moving the ball, they made a few baskets that took us out of the game.”

In the fourth quarter, Redemptorist came out and dominated. With 3:47 remaining to play in the game, Ascension Catholic found itself looking at 51-39 scoring deficit. In trying to make some plays, senior guard Jordynn Brown fouled out with 1:36 left to play.

“We played lazy defense, but I told my girls we have to play the same way all the time on defense,” Joseph said. “Defense wins games, when you play good defense it’s going to spill over to your offense.”

Malancon finished the game with 16 points, Brown contributed 12 points and eighth grader Daija Harvey added 11 points.

The Lady Bulldogs will return home on Jan. 5 to host Plaquemine at 5:30 p.m.
