The no. 18 Ascension Catholic boys’ basketball team (16-11) travel to 8-1A district opponent no. 15 West St. John (9-10) for the first round of the 1A LHSAA State Playoffs on Feb. 29 at 6 p.m.

West St. John beat Ascension Catholic in both district matchups this year, but Bulldogs’ head coach Tyler Turner said he’s fine with the team’s seeding and he likes the matchup with West St. John.

“I’m excited for the matchup and think we do match up well with West St. John. They just have more depth than us, like all the teams,” Turner said. “If our players go out and execute our game plan we have a chance.”

The Bulldogs haven’t executed well since their Feb. 3 win over Ascension Christian in district play. Since then, ACHS lost three-straight games to end the season.

Turner said his team’s morale comes and goes.

“I don’t fuss at them but I talk to them and encourage them giving them the life lessons through the game,” Turner said. “We try and keep them together and have the one voice on the team.”

Turner added, “We’re hoping to see a good crowd Friday night, and we hope to play hard and advance to the next round.”
