The Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears’ football season begins on Aug. 27, and former Ascension Catholic All-State defensive lineman Delmond Landry is slated to start at defensive tackle.

Third-year head coach Tucker Peavey spoke highly of the Ascension Catholic product.

“Delmond has a good work ethic and seems to be a very humble guy," Peavey said. "He comes from a quality program in Ascension Catholic, and it looks like his coaches and teachers have done a great job teaching and coaching him."

Landry is up to 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds and will play defensive tackle and some defensive end in the Bears’ four-man front.

Landry is the only player from Louisiana as the junior colleges in Mississippi are only allowed to sign eight out-of-state players.

Peavey said, “We have to do our homework because any kid we offer out of state must fit our system on the field and in the classroom."

The Bears went 3-6 last year, and they play in the South Division, which includes preseason favorites Copiah Lincoln and Gulf Coast CC.

“Both programs are rated in the top 15 in junior colleges, and on the North side, East Mississippi won our league and was crowned national champion last year," Peavey said.

The Bears return sophomore tackle Vincent Calhoun (6-foot-4, 330) on offense to go with two solid tight ends.

There is a three-way battle at QB with sophomore Tyler Shell returning.

The Bears will be young at wide receiver and running back.

The offense will again work out of the spread.

The Bears' defense looks to be the strength of the team, along with a solid kicker. Defensive end Kevin Alce returns and has been mentioned in some preseason All-American teams.

The linebackers are very good with CJ Johnson and Josh Samander returning.

A strong secondary returns starters in Ashton Jackson and Jeff Pate.

Landry will anchor one of the defensive tackle spots, along with several other guys in the rotation.

The kicker will be Reed James. He has a strong leg, and he may also punt.

The SMCC Bears are gearing up for what they hope to be a great season with postseason play.

And a local product just may end up being a major contributor to their success.
