Donaldsonville alum, Cargo named finalist for prestigious award

Grambling State University junior defensive back Percy Cargo, Jr. recently earned the tremendous honor of being selected a finalist for the 2017 STATS FCS Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award.

The Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award is named after the wife of legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, the third annual award is presented to an FCS student-athlete who excels not only in the classroom, but in the community and beyond.

Cargo, who earned the United States Marine Corps Excellence in Leadership Award at the Bayou Classic, boasts a 3.76 GPA as a business management major and hopes to expand his academic excellence by obtaining a master's degree in economics after graduation.

This season, Cargo has played in all 12 games for the Tigers and ranks fifth in tackles. He has 49 total tackles, including 34 solo stops and has 3.5 tackles for a loss of 17 yards. Cargo has also added one sack, two pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Last Monday, South Dakota State wide receiver Jake Wieneke won the award.
