Foster wins 3A discus title
DHS’ Floyd Foster needed every throw possible to win the 3A State Discus Throw Title at the LHSAA State Track and Field meet on Saturday at the Bernie Moore Track in Baton Rouge. Regardless of it was his first or last, he walked away as champion and that’s all that matters.
After a rainstorm came through Baton Rouge on Friday night, the throwing conditions weren’t ideal for the athletes. Many faulted, many complained, only Foster walked away as champion with a final mark of 153’4”.
Foster was the only Tiger to qualify and compete at the state meet, but he still wanted to represent his school with pride.
“Of course I wanted to win,” Foster said. “I’m glad to be able to bring back a medal to my school and to my family.”
At the 2013 state meet, Foster finished third in the discus throw. This year he knew he could win it.
Coach Brian Richardson has worked with Foster since his ninth grade year, and knew Foster had the abilities to do well in the discus throw.
“He took the adverse conditions and used them in his favor,” Richardson said. “He stayed focused the whole way and accomplished his goal.”
Foster potentially had the farthest throw of the day early on, but the officials called it a foul. Richardson said from there he noticed Foster would kind of “pull up” a little bit to try to not foul.
“But on his very last throw he knew he had to go all out on it, foul or not, and he’d be in position to win it,” Richardson said.
