Captain Shreve football, Byrd expected to rule LHSAA District 1-5A in 2022
Crosstown rivals Byrd and Captain Shreve battled to the wire in the District 1-5A football race last season, and the Jackets and Gators are expected to finish at the top again based on an anonymous poll of league coaches.
Shreve was selected to finish first by a point over Byrd, which won the 2021 matchup 28-10 as both schools finished 6-1 in the league last season. The Jackets’ only district loss was to Natchitoches Central. Parkway, which knocked the Gators out of the 2021 postseason, was selected third, followed by Benton, Haughton, Natchitoches Central, Airline and Southwood.
It appears Shreve will begin the season under interim coach Adam Kirby, the team’s offensive coordinator last season. He takes over for Bryant Sepulvado, who moved into administration as Shreve’s assistant principal. Airline will also have a new coach in Justin Scogin, who takes over for longtime coach Bo Meeks, who opted to retire amid health challenges.
There’s plenty of quarterback talent in 1-5A, and it should make the league fun to watch. Captain Shreve’s Kenyon Terrell, Byrd’s Lake Lambert, Parkway’s Ashton Martin, Benton’s Gray Walters and Haughton’s Colin Rains are all seniors with plenty of experience.
