Four parish teams remain in LSWA polls
Now at the halfway mark of the season, four of the six parish high-school football teams have remained in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s top-15 rankings.
The highest-ranked team in the parish this week is St. Amant.
For the first time this season, the Gators broke into the Class 5A top 10 as they hold down the No. 10 spot.
St. Amant held on to secure a nice road win over previously undefeated St. James last Friday night to improve to 5-0 for the third year in a row.
The Gators are now all set for their biggest test of the season. They’ll open up District 5-5A play this Friday night at home against 4-1 reigning champion Catholic.
The eighth-ranked Bears are coming off of a 34-7 victory over Teurlings Catholic.
Last season, St. Amant lost a 31-28 heartbreaker at Catholic.
Gator archrival East Ascension moved up two spots to No. 13 in the Class 5A rankings.
The Spartans moved to 4-1 last Friday night as they rolled past St. Charles, 21-2. St. Charles was previously undefeated and ranked No. 3 in 3A.
East Ascension is now set to open district play with a short road trip to face 3-2 Dutchtown. The Griffins are coming off of a 24-21 victory over Lutcher.
West Monroe is No. 1 in 5A, with John Curtis, Evangel, Rummel and Acadiana rounding out the rest of the top five.
In Class 3A, Donaldsonville remained in the No. 11 spot, despite an impressive 30-0 road victory over 4A Livonia on Friday night.
The win pushed the Tigers to a perfect 5-0, their best record since 2010. The five victories already eclipses their four wins from last year.
This week, they’ll open up play in their new district as they face rival St. James. The Wildcats are 4-1 and ranked No. 8.
De La Salle is No. 1 in 3A, with University, Sterlington, West Feliciana and Iowa rounding out the rest of the top five.
In Class 1A, Ascension Catholic moved up two spots to No. 11 after a 47-0 shutout victory over previously undefeated and 10th-ranked Covenant Christian.
The Bulldogs are a perfect 5-0 for the first time since 1980.
This week, they’ll go on the road for their District 6-1A opener against 3-2 East Iberville.
Logansport is No. 1 in 1A, with Kentwood, Opelousas Catholic, Lafayette Christian and Haynesville rounding out the rest of the top five.
