Parish football teams fall in latest LSWA polls

After a bit of a rough week that saw three of the six parish high schools lose, there has been quite the shakeup in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s polls for this week.
Heading into last Friday night, St. Amant had emerged as the highest-ranked team in Ascension. The undefeated Gators surged to No. 8 in the 5A poll after a big upset victory over Catholic.
However, they were only able to last one week in the top 10. The Gators were upset by parish and district rival Dutchtown on the road on Friday night.
After suffering their first loss of the season, St. Amant dropped four spots to No. 12.
The Gators should be able to get on track this week as they host 4-3 McKinley.
Also in 5A, East Ascension moved up one spot to No. 11 after winning their fifth straight game. The 6-1 Spartans blanked Broadmoor at home, 31-0.
They are now all set for their biggest game of the season. They will go on the road to face No. 10 Catholic (5-2), the defending district champion.
West Monroe remains No. 1 in 5A, with John Curtis, Evangel, Acadiana and Scotlandville rounding out the rest of the top five.
Just two weeks ago, Donaldsonville was a perfect 5-0 and No. 11 in the Class 3A poll, but since then, they’ve lost two straight.
A week after losing a 26-22 heartbreaker to No. 8 St. James, the Tigers were beaten soundly by sixth-ranked St. Charles, 35-12, last Friday night.
As a result, Donaldsonville has dropped five spots to No. 17.
The Tigers will try to bounce back this Friday night as they host 3-4 Lusher Charter.
De La Salle remains No. 1 in 3A, with University, Sterlington, West Feliciana and Iowa rounding out the rest of the top five.
Prior to last week, Ascension Catholic was 6-0 for the first time since 1968 and ranked in the top 10 for the first time since last season.
Although, the ninth-ranked Bulldogs came crashing down hard on Friday night as they were dominated, 30-8, at home by Southern Lab.
With the loss, Ascension Catholic has dropped three spots in the Class 1A poll. They now stand at No. 12.
The Bulldogs will be looking for their seventh victory on Friday night as they go on the road to face 2-5 White Castle.
Logansport is No. 1 in 1A, with Kentwood, Opelousas Catholic, Lafayette Christian and Haynesville rounding out the rest of the top five.
