The Louisiana Sports Writers Association recently released its preseason high-school football polls, and two Ascension Parish teams were in the top 10 of their respective classes.

East Ascension was the highest-ranked team in the parish. They landed at No. 5 in Class 5A.

The only teams that are ranked ahead of them are: top-ranked John Curtis, second-ranked Zachary, third-ranked West Monroe and fifth-ranked Destrehan.

The Spartans are coming off of a 20-0 victory over Woodlawn in their jamboree.

Last season, East Ascension went 8-2 and won a share of the District 5-5A title. They went on to reach the second round of the playoffs.

The Spartans will face Lutcher this Friday night at home in their season opener.

The other top-10 team in the parish is Ascension Catholic. The Bulldogs ranked seventh in Class 1A.

The 1A rankings are as follows: 1. West St. John, 2. Kentwood, 2. Southern Lab, 4. Lafayette Christian, 5. Haynesville, 6. Oak Grove.

Ascension Catholic pulled off an impressive 20-0 win over Episcopal in their jamboree.

The Bulldogs are coming off of their most successful season in 25 years. They went 8-2 in 2017, and reached the Division-IV state title game, before falling to Lafayette Christian.

Ascension Catholic will hit the road to face Mentorship Academy in their opener this Friday night.
