Bevy of parish softball players make All-District 6-1A

Two of the top three teams in District 6-1A this season were from Ascension Parish, and as expected, both squads were well-represented in the league’s postseason honors.

Ascension Catholic and Ascension Christian joined forces to place 18 players on the All-District 6-1A team.

The Lady Bulldogs continued their domination of the district. This led to them fielding 11 players on the squad.

For the fourth straight season, Ascension Catholic went a perfect 8-0 in league play, en route to claiming another district championship.

“The seniors, they’re like 24-0 in district over their careers, and that’s saying a lot, because we have a target on our backs; everyone wants to beat us,” Lady Bulldog head coach Don Henry said. “I’m proud of that. We get everyone’s best game, and we’ve been able to respond.”

Ascension Catholic went 21-9 during the regular season and reached the State Softball Tournament in Sulphur for a sixth straight season.

From there, they reached the semifinals for the second time in three years, before being eliminated by False River.

Three of the Lady Bulldogs’ seniors made the first team.

Infielder Alicia Canatella led the bunch as she was named the District 6-1A MVP. Canatella hit .421 this season.

Lauren Landry also made the first team from the infield after hitting .429 with 11 RBIs.

The final senior to make the first team for Ascension Catholic was outfielder Bailey Acosta—who hit .294 with eight RBIs.

Four Lady Bulldogs joined them on the first team.

Three were juniors. This included infielder Isabelle Abadie, outfielder Emme Medine and catcher Ceily Grisaffe. Grisaffe was last year’s district MVP and hit a blistering .529.

The final Lady Bulldog to make the first team was sophomore outfielder Angelle Theriot. She hit .389 with nine RBIs.

Senior Abigail Landry made the second team after hitting .467.

Also making the second team was the sophomore pitching duo of Hailee Rome and Katie Pizzolato.

Ascension Catholic’s final all-district selection was freshman Mackenzie Marroy. The infielder burst onto the scene with a .526 batting average.

Henry was named the district’s Coach of the Year.

Ascension Christian had a successful season under first-year head coach George Gutierrez. The Lady Lions went 11-9 and finished third in the district.

Ascension Christian went on to reach the playoffs, but like Ascension Catholic, they were eliminated by False River.

A slew of talented freshmen filled the All-District 6-1A team for Ascension Christian.

Leading the first-team selections was freshman infielder Layla Thompson. Thompson hit a sensational .667 and scored 14 runs.

In her third year as the Lady Lions’ ace, Maddie Gautreau was named first-team all-district pitcher. Her catcher Hallie Dupre also earned first-team honors after hitting .529.

All three players made the first team last season as well.

Another Lady Lion freshman infielder in Skye Fontenot made the second team. She hit .458.

Rounding out the rest of the second team for Ascension Christian was junior outfielder Brooke LeBlanc.

The Lady Lions had two honorable-mention selections in senior infielders Mikala Oulman and Lauren Thompson.
