Many parish track stars make All-Metro team
The parish's track stars were honored recently as many made the Baton Rouge area's All-Metro team.
Ascension Catholic saw plenty of honors go to Yale signee Zach Capello.
Capello made the squad in three different events.
He made it in the 800--where his best time came in at one minute and 57.91 seconds. He also made it in the 1,600. There, his best time came in at four minutes and 20.70 seconds. Finally, he made it in the 3,200--where his best time was nine minutes and 25.54 seconds.
This year, Capello won state titles in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. It was the fourth time in a row he had won state championships in both events.
Due to his dominance in so many different events, Capello was named the area's Outstanding Track Performer.
For the girls, Ascension Catholic's Maerys Joseph made the All-Metro team in the 800 with a year-best time of two minutes and 16.57 seconds--which set a new 1A record at the state meet. It was also good enough to win her a state title.
Girl's track head coach Rocky Capello was named the area's Coach of the Year.
For the boys, St. Amant's Dylan Stephens made the All-Metro squad. In the discus event, his best performance of the year came when he secured a measurement of 151 feet and two inches.
Stephens was able to finish second in the discus at the district meet and fifth at the state competition.
Teammate Keilyn Raven made the All-Metro team in the triple-jump event. Raven's best jump this season was 45 feet and one inch. He finished second in the event at the district meet and third at state.
Another Gator made the All-Metro team from the track in Cody Simmons. Simmons' best performance in the 400 this year put him at 49.52 seconds.
Dutchtown's Zach Kilpatrick made the squad for the 300 hurdles. His best time was 39.74 seconds. Kilpatrick finished second at the district meet.
St. Amant's 4 x 100 relay team also made the All-Metro squad as they secured a season-best time of 42.97 seconds.
For the girls, Dutchtown's Leah Scott made the team in the long-jump with her best jump coming in at 17 feet and 9.75 inches. Scott finished second in the event at the district meet and sixth at state.
St. Amant's Maggie Duplechein also made the squad in the high-jump. Her best jump was five feet and two inches.
Duplechein also made the team for the triple-jump. Her best measurement of the season came in at 35 feet and four inches. She won the high-jump at the district meet and finished second in the triple-jump.
Her teammate Cameron Matherne made the All-Metro team in the javelin event. Matherne's best throw of the season was for 119 feet and five inches.
She won the event at the district meet and finished fifth at the state competition.
Teammate Morgan Tidwell also made the team for the javelin as her best throw came in at 114 feet and 11 inches. Tidwell finished second at the district meet.
