Former Tiger great takes over as new boy's track coach

Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.

After an accomplished track and football career at Tulane, one of Donaldsonville’s greatest athletes has come back home.

Recently, the school hired former Tiger stalwart Devon Breaux as its new head boy’s track and field coach.

Breaux was one of the most prolific football players the school has ever seen.

He was a four-year letterman, but it was during his junior season that he really established himself as one of the top prospects in the state.

That season, he threw for more than 1,600 yards and 20 touchdowns, while rushing for over 900 yards and 10 more scores.

It set the stage for a huge senior season for Breaux.

He led the state with 2,873 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. Breaux added 921 yards and 13 scores on the ground, as he was named the district Offensive MVP and a member of the All-State team.

Breaux was ranked by Scout.com as a three-star recruit, and ESPN.com listed him as the 28th-best recruit in the state.

He eventually signed with Tulane.

Beaux transitioned to wide receiver for the Green Wave. He finished out his football career there as a three-year letterman with 38 catches for 587 yards and five touchdowns.

However, it was on the track where he experienced the most success.

As in football, he was a three-year letterman, and he made school history by becoming the first male track and field star to participate in three straight NCAA Regionals.

As a true freshman, he was named Freshman of the Meet at the Conference USA Championship, after finishing second in the long jump and third in the high jump.

His greatest achievement came back in 2015, when he won the American Athletic Conference title in the long jump with a measurement of 7.56 meters.

He then became the only Tulane track star to qualify for the NCAA National Championships after a big performance at the East Regionals.

At the national meet, he earned honorable mention All-American honors.

Breaux now takes over a Donaldsonville boy’s track squad that finished seventh at the district meet and 14th at the state meet last year.
