The 2016 Ascension Catholic High School girl’s powerlifting team was recognized at the Ascension Parish Council meeting in Donaldsonville on May 5, for winning the Class 1A (Division V) state championship held at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on the University of Louisiana in Monroe campus.

The team was coached by head coach Joe Ryan and assistant coaches Drey Trosclair, Chandra Ewen and Javon Yarbrough.

“This year, we were blessed enough to win our second straight championship with our girl’s powerlifting team,” Ryan said. “This year was a brand new team with a lot of young faces out there. We had 12 girls on our team last year and lost all but four returning that were actual lifters. Including this year at state, we had five freshmen that had never lifted for us before, so it was an amazing feat for us to come back and win the state championship yet again.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work these young ladies put in and the amount of time and dedication they spent in the weight room and at every meet.” Pictured in the front are: Parish President Kenny Matassa.
