Soon, United Airlines will have an airport lounge in Phoenix again.

In a Monday event at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, airline officials announced a new United Club will open Sept. 27 in Terminal 3, near gate E3.

The 6,080-square-foot passenger lounge will offer United fliers a quiet place before their flights and amenities such as travel assistance, Wi-Fi, snacks and drinks.

United previously operated a passenger lounge in Terminal 2, but it closed when the terminal itself closed in February 2020.

What's in the new United lounge?

The United Club at Sky Harbor will boast abundant seating, with 122 seats where United passengers can relax, work or socialize.

It's nearly double the amount of seats as the former Terminal 2 lounge, said Aaron McMillan, United Airlines' managing director of hospitality and planning.

The lounge will feature inclusive amenities such as gender-neutral restrooms, as well as a Wellness Room designed to accommodate nursing parents and people looking for a space for meditation or prayer, he said.

When inside the lounge, people will notice an Arizona-centered aesthetic that includes locally sourced furniture and décor and murals from local artists inspired by the desert landscape.

"The opening of this club is a reflection of our dedication and our commitment to the customers in (Phoenix) and our community as a whole as well," McMillan said.

Lounge debut coincides with anticipated growth at Phoenix airport

Sky Harbor is growing. It was the ninth busiest airport in the U.S. and 11th busiest in the world in 2021 based on passenger traffic, according to Airlines Council International.

United already is a big player here, as Phoenix is its fifth busiest non-hub airport. But it expects to expand capacity in the coming years, about 80% above its current capacity by 2026.

That's why the new United Club is needed in Sky Harbor, according to United.

Opening the new lounge aligns with United's focus on modernizing the customer experience and meet the expectations of their passengers, particularly as corporate travel resumes.

Sky Harbor's United Club will be the second new United Club to open in 2022, following a location at its Newark hub in May, and the first to open in one of the carrier's non-hub airports since 2020.

When the United Club opens, it will become Sky Harbor's seventh passenger lounge.

It will join the Delta Air Lines-exclusive Delta Sky Club and one of the airport's two Escape Lounge locations as the third lounge in Terminal 3.

Terminal 4 has the airport's other Escape Lounge, plus the American Airlines-exclusive Admirals Club, the Centurion Lounge and the military-exclusive USO.

An eighth passenger lounge, the Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club, is coming soon to Terminal 4 in the new Southwest Airlines concourse. Airport spokeswoman Heather Shelbrack told The Republic that she expects it will open in 2023, but not before Phoenix hosts the Super Bowl.
