Through a barely noticeable portal in Terminal 3 of the Phoenix airport is a new retreat where United Airlines passengers can unwind before or between flights.

United Airlines' new United Club opened Sept. 27, more than two years after the airline's lounge in Terminal 2 closed with the terminal itself.

The 6,080-square-foot lounge has 122 seats of different kinds, from barstools to couches and recliners, and ample charging stations for electronic devices.

There's also free food and beverage service, though beer, wine and spirits aren't yet available since the lounge is waiting on its liquor license.

The Arizona Republic got a view of the United Club on its opening day. Here's what it has to offer.

Where is the Phoenix United Club?

The United Club is on the fourth floor of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Terminal 3, near gate E3. It's next to the Discover Arizona store. The lounge is open 5 a.m.-11:30 p.m. daily.

People can work or lounge inside the United Club at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Who is allowed in the United Club?

Passengers who buy a day pass or United Club membership may use the lounge.

They must also have a reservation for a United Airlines flight. People flying with another airline cannot visit the United Club, even if they have a United Club membership or day pass.

A same-day boarding pass for travel with United must be presented to gain access.

How much does United Club admission cost?

One-time passes cost $59 and can be purchased on United's mobile app.

A United Club membership costs $650 per year and allows access to the airline's 45 United Clubs worldwide.

Members can bring up to two adult guests, or one adult guest and dependent children under age 21, as long as the guests are also flying with United, according to United's website.

The United Club Infinite credit card offered through Chase Bank includes United Club membership as one of its perks. The card has an annual fee of $525.

What food and drink does the United Club have?

Food is served buffet style. Offerings include chicken sliders, ratatouille wraps, elote, chips and salsa and a salad bar. Bowls at the bar hold packaged snacks like cactus-shaped cookies and mixed nuts.

The lounge also has a coffee maker and a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine that lets users create their own flavors of soda.

Only soft drinks were available on opening day since the United Club did not yet have its liquor license. United spokeswoman Ana Flores-Gonzalez expects the lounge to get its license within days.

Ethan Happ, bartender, serves up a diet coke during the first day open for the United Club at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Sept. 27, 2022.

Are drinks free at the United Club?

Snacks, soft drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free with a day pass or membership to the United Club.

What are passengers saying?

Nancy Bertschy was one of about 35 United flyers enjoying the club during the early afternoon.

The frequent United flyer, who divides her time between Phoenix and Chicago, recalled visiting the club's Terminal 2 location, which was about half the size of the new club. She appreciated its fresh and modern look.

Compared to other United Clubs she's been to, she expected the new Sky Harbor location to be a little bigger, but was impressed with what was inside.

"The food has expanded from what it used to be," she said.

What else does the Phoenix United Club have?

The lounge has Wi-Fi, gender-neutral restrooms and a Wellness Room designed to accommodate nursing parents and people looking for a space for meditation or prayer.

United representatives at the front desk can provide travel assistance. A screen across from the front desk shows arrival and departure information.

Service animals are allowed, but must be well-behaved, follow their owners' direction and cannot occupy seats.

Passengers are not allowed to lay on the floor or put their feet on the furniture.
